NO MORE FRIDAY NIGHT DRINKS

As we approach 2020, it’s vital that we acknowledge that the world is changing and so is the workplace.  While this ever-evolving workforce is exciting and filled with possibilities, organisations are also seeing a shift in the way we encourage team cohesiveness and engagement.  Industry trends suggest that we are seeing a shift away from causal team get-togethers in favour of more structured team building events.  In short; Friday afternoon drinks just aren’t cutting it anymore and we wanted to explore why.

WHY:

More millennials and Gen Z are entering the workforce.

In 2020 Millennials will make up 35% of the workforce and 75% of the workforce by 2025. These new generations appear to be more self-focused with a greater emphasis on work/life balance.  This means that they are less likely to stick around for work drinks after the ‘working day’ is done.

We are also seeing that these generations form bonds with colleagues in different ways.  With a heavy focus on digital and social media connections, you are more likely to receive a friend request from your millennial or gen z co-workers than make an in person connection.

More working parents in the workforce

Whether it’s because of a passion for their career or the ever-increasing cost of living more and more mums and dads are re-entering the workforce.  Working parents tend to have less time to spend away from the family home, which means they may not be able to make it to Friday afternoon drinks.

Remote workers

More and more people are taking advantage of the technology available to us and working from home / remotely which means they are not actually in the office to meet for drinks on a Friday afternoon… unless teleportation becomes a thing!

Multicultural workforce

As workforces become increasingly multicultural it is important to acknowledge that drinking isn’t a part of many people’s culture. With New Zealand’s society becoming ever more multicultural, this is going to become more and more prevalent in the workforce.

SOLUTION:

Team Building Activities

Step away from the standard team activities and take it to the next level with a fun and engaging team building activity!  This is a great way to get your team together and see how people work in a non-work environment.  With so many different program options with a wide variety of outcomes there is a team building activity for every group, no matter how big or small.

Company / Team Conferences

This is especially useful for teams who have remote workers or multiple offices in different locations.  Company conferences are an amazing way to bring your team together and for people to see their colleagues in an out of work environment, it also provides you with the opportunity to discuss hot topics within the organisation or plan for the year ahead.

Team Building Workshops

A proven and effective way to learn about your team’s strengths and weaknesses in an accelerated manner; team building workshops will help you identify ways to further engage your team and boost cohesiveness in the workplace.

Now obviously every team is different and ultimately you know your team better than we do.  Keeping your team feeling valued and engaged is becoming increasingly important if you wish to continue to build a positive team culture into the future.  They say change is as good as a holiday, so why not ditch the Friday night drinks and try something new?
